Shawnee Forest is aglow with Eastern Redbud, Cercis canadensis. The roads into the Shawnee Lodge are lined with these nearly magical trees, which appear to be transformed into smoke by the early morning fog.
If there were no other reason to visit the bottom lands of the Ohio river, the tops of these Appalachian ridges and the surrounding forests, bedecked with the just arrived neo-tropical warblers, Shawnee and its Eastern Redbuds are a must-see.
Two things I learned this weekend: Redbeds are the host plant for the lovely Henry's Elfin butterfly and the buds themselves have a sweet taste to the human tongue as well. Welcome spring... we've been wait for you.
