Old Woman Creek September 02, 2008

One more look at an Ohio beach, and this is one well worth the look. Old Woman Creek is a part of the National Estuarine Research Reserve. An estuary is where the water (streams) meet the sea, or in this case- Lake Erie. As a transition zone, this preserve is known for its freshwater marshes, swamp forests, barrier sand beach, upland forests, and open waters of the estuary.

Not only does it have many interesting plants- both terrestrial and aquatic, Old Woman Creek is an excellent place to bird. The photo features a Great Egret and numerous Ring-billed and Herring Gulls, but I am certain a lawn chair and an afternoon of total beach-birding might turn up some interesting finds. Next time you are near Huron, Ohio stop by and see their amazing visitor center as well.
