| Discover the diversity of Shawnee Forest- Trees! Shawnee Forest is defined by its timber. As we explore the ridges and valleys of the forest, we'll be in the shadows of several dozen species of trees. Chestnut, White, Scarlet, and occasionally Blackjack oaks cloak the high razorback ridgetops. Massive Tulip Trees and Red Oaks carpet hillsides, and native Sweetgum, White Basswood, and Umbrella Magnolia border the streams. They overtop many interesting shrubs, such as Spicebush and Pawpaw. In early May a pink mist of Redbud still blushes along the roadsides, and offsets the stunning white blooms of Flowering Dogwood. There's no better place to get a good lesson in dendrology than Shawnee! |
